The complete baby registry checklist in 2026 covers 10 categories and 60 to 80 items: travel system, sleep essentials, feeding, diapering, baby wearing, bathing, nursery, safety, on-the-go, and entertainment. The most important structural insight about this checklist is that the most-researched brands in most categories are not available on Amazon or Target. Solly Baby wraps, Newton mattresses, Nuna strollers, Owlet monitors, Lovevery play mats, Willow breast pumps: all are DTC or specialty brands that require a multi-store registry to add. A baby registry built on a single-store platform captures approximately 30% of what parents actually researched.

Why the 6-Store Rule Applies to Every Baby Registry

The average parent needs items from at least 6 different retailers to complete their ideal baby registry. The travel system is from a specialty baby retailer. The nursery furniture is from a home store. The nursing pump is from a medical supply company. The organic swaddles are from a DTC brand. The white noise machine is from another DTC brand. No single store carries all of these.

This is not a new trend. Baby gear has always been distributed across specialized retailers. What has changed in 2026 is that the most-researched brands have moved increasingly to direct-to-consumer channels with no retail presence at all. Solly Baby does not sell on Amazon. Newton does not sell on Amazon. Lovevery does not sell on Amazon. A registry built on Amazon misses all three of the brands that generate the most social sharing among new parents.

The baby registry is the most research-intensive registry occasion in American consumer culture. Parents spend months evaluating brands across every category. The registry should reflect that research. If it reflects what Amazon stocks instead, the parents received something different from what they chose.

How Many Items Should Be on a Baby Registry?

The optimal baby registry has 60 to 80 items across all 10 categories. This count is driven by two requirements: enough items to cover every price tier from under $20 to $500, and enough items to serve a guest list where each person buys only one thing. A 20-person shower needs at least 20 items available at appropriate price points. A 60-person shower needs significantly more.

  • Under $30: 8 to 12 items including small feeding accessories, bath items, burp cloths, and specific consumable items. This tier serves coworkers and casual shower attendees.
  • $30 to $75: 12 to 16 items including specific feeding products, small sleep accessories, and baby care bundles. The most purchased single-item tier at most showers.
  • $75 to $150: 12 to 16 items including quality carriers, specific monitor accessories, and nursery items. Close friends and aunts and uncles typically give in this range.
  • $150 to $300: 10 to 12 items including the bassinet, the nursing pillow, the car seat base, and key nursery pieces. Parents and close family typically give in this range.
  • $300 or more: 4 to 6 items including the travel system, the crib, and the major electronic items. Grandparents and large group gifts typically target this tier.

The Most Commonly Missed Baby Registry Items

  • Diaper pail: the most-forgotten nursery essential. Every parent wishes they had registered for one before the first week.
  • Baby nail clippers and file set: sounds minor. Used every three days from birth. Never on any registry.
  • Nursing stool or footrest: the item midwives recommend and parents discover too late.
  • Postpartum recovery items: heating pad, sitz bath, nursing pads, lanolin cream. Completely absent from most baby registries.
  • Second car seat base: for a second car. Couples with two vehicles need two bases. Almost nobody registers for the second one.

Baby monitor charging cable backup: the cable that fails at 3am in the third month. Register for a backup before it happens.
